Does anyone have an idea why the car will run only if you disconnect the airflow meter connector? i have changed the flowmeter and still won't run connected 2003 xc90 6cyl

The ECM (engine control module) uses live data to calculate how much air/fuel mix should be used, based on airflow, temperature, oxygen levels, engine power demand, rpm, and more.
If any of the live data sensors is not working, the ECM uses default values that are are somewhere in the safe middle of the live data range to help the engine keep running, albeit not optimally.

It sounds like this is what your engine is doing: defaulting to safe values when the live data is disconnected

You really need to use a code scanner to find out which ecm inputs are OK, and which are out of range. Then you can isolate the suspect sensor and be able to investigate the cause.
Note that a sensor with implausible values is not always a faulty sensor: example: air leaks in a turbocharged Diesel engine can upset the air-fuel mix, resulting in sensors having implausible readings, but the root cause is actually an air leak, not a faulty sensor.
